How did you first hear about Jaipur Rugs, and why did you decide to apply?
I first heard about Jaipur Rugs when they had a booth at my college’s career fair. Of the many companies that attend the fair (stretching across all design and art based practices) Jaipur Rugs was actually the only one that stood out to me and occupied my interest.
I decided to apply when I found out that my close friend from school, Melanie, had just landed the internship job with Jaipur Rugs. She told me all about the type of work they wanted her to do, and that she would be flying out to India to be in the main office in Jaipur. This excited me so much that I wanted to apply, and so she helped me in passing my resume.
What does a typical day in the office look like for you?
A typical day in the office for me is at the loom and experimenting with materials. As a design and development intern I am given tasks such as material exploration and ideation. I am lucky enough that there is a loom in the office that I can really use to my advantage to make use of my strengths. I have a strong passion for weaving and other thread and textile related processes. So in a normal day I make samples and also generate ideas for potential art pieces that can then be displayed in the office, or be scrutinized for the possibility of production. At work I also have been dabbling in the creation of repeating patterns through computer aided design and hand drawing/painting.
Favorite music genre to work/travel/relax to?
Believe it or not, my favorite music to relax to is instrumental music. Sitar and tabla in traditional Indian music, guzheng/erhu/pipa in traditional Chinese/Japanese music, or classical music (my favorite composers are Frederic Chopin, Johann Sebastian Bach, Amadeus Mozart, Dustin O’ Halloran, Yann Tiersen, etc). I also have a fondness for the great Asha Bhosle, Kishore Kumar, Abdel Halim Hafez, Oum Kalthoum, Mohammed Abdel Wahab, and other Indian/Arabic classic musicians and singers. I do listen to some contemporary music (and here I am all across the board) with bands like Dr. Dog, James Blake, Bjork, Of Montreal, Grimes, Brooke Candy, Die Antwoord, Neutral Milk Hotel, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah!, Deerhoof, and of course The Beatles…. And that’s just to name a few.
If you could choose a superpower, which would you choose?
If I could have one superpower I think I would choose the ability of telekinesis. To be able to bend/change/move/morph material reality with my own mind! Either that or the ability to speak, read, and write every language known to mankind, even those that are now extinct.
What inspires you?
It’s a very loaded question so I will try to be concise…..A lot inspires me! I typically try to look into the small details of my immediate surroundings for inspiration. Sometimes bugs inspire me, or even patterns in the dirt inspire me. The beauty in nature inspires me, and so even life itself is an inspiring thought. To get a clearer picture: culture inspires me. I am very fond of Indian, Middle Eastern, and Chinese culture, music, and visual imagery. People, language, and conversations also inspire me. And of course, textiles inspire me!
